Education
As part of the NNRC mission to increase the competence in nuclear science in Norway, the University of Oslo (UiO) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) have launched new Bachelor and Master programs with significant investments and new hires to support the programs.
Bachelor programs (3 years) taught in Norwegian:
- Kjernefysikk og nuklearteknologi (Nuclear Physics and Technology) at UiO
- Radioaktivitet og miljø (Radioactivity and Environment) at NMBU
Master programs (2 years) taught in English:
- Nuclear Science at UiO
- Nukleær- og miljøvitenskap (Nuclear and Environmental Science) at NMBU
In addition, NMBU participates in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation MINDER.
Together, these programs cover a wide spectrum of subjects ranging from fundamental nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry to applications of nuclear science related to environmental radioactivity, radiation protection and preparedness, nuclear energy, decommissioning, and medical applications of nuclear science including radiopharmacy. Students have the possibility to take courses at both universities.

FYS3500 – Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics
The course is an introduction to nuclear and particle physics, from the universe's elementary particles and the forces that act between them, to the quantum structure of systems composed of elementary particles. Weight is given to current challenges and new results from cutting-edge research.

FYS4050 - Project management in a nuclear context (5 ECTS)
→ Course website
FYS-STK4155 – Anvendt dataanalyse og maskinlæring
FYS4505 – Methods and Instrumentation for Nuclear and Particle Physics
FYS-KJM4506 – Nuclear Methods and Instrumentation
FYS4515A – Nuclear Reactions(5 ECTS)Ø
FYS4535 – Medical Applications of Nuclear Physics
The course provides an introduction to how radioactive substances and the physical properties of the atomic nucleus are used in medicine, both for diagnostics and therapy. → Course website
FYS4570 – Advanced Nuclear Structure
FYS4580 – Introduction to Nuclear Reactor physics
How is fission of heavy atomic nuclei used to produce energy?
In this course, you will receive a thorough introduction to the physics of nuclear reactors. We discuss the fission chain reaction and nuclear criticality, different reactor types and safety, and use what you have learned to simulate a reactor core. This course provides you with the knowledge to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power. → Course website
FYS4590 – Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT)
FYS4711 – Stråling og dosimetry
FYS5585 – Advanced Reactor Physics
KJM5903 – Radiation Protection
Can be replaced by KJM350 (NMBU).
KJM5912 – Radiochemistry
FYS4711 – Stråling og dosimetry
FARM5230 – Radiopharmacy: Making Drugs for Diagnosis and Treatment
Courses at NMBU
RAD200 Nuclear Industries, Facilities and Activities (5 stp)
Lectures will provide the necessary background to different nuclear facilities and activities and will be supported by discussions, exercises (group and individual) and case studies. Site visits will provide insights into the practical challenges of decommissioning, environmental remediation and waste management. Students will conduct their own analysis and assessment of a chosen facility or activity and present a written work and oral presentation for discussion within the classroom. Class exercises and presentations will allow teachers to monitor student learning progression. → Course description
RAD205 Emergency Preparedness (5 stp)
Lectures will provide an overview of the different types and phases of nuclear and radiological accidents and incidents. ICRP and IAEA INES (International nuclear and radiological event scale) classification. Introduction to the Norwegian Crisis Committee for Emergency Preparedness. Accident scenarios and radiological impact modelling (SNAP, ARGOS). Triage, protective and remediation actions. Socioeconomic and psychological impacts of accidents. Public perception, communication and social media response.
