The Yara’s Birkeland Prize is an annual award established by Yara International to honor the legacy of Kristian Birkeland, one of Norway’s most prominent scientists and a pioneer in both physics and chemistry. The prize recognizes outstanding young researchers in these fields who have made significant contributions to fundamental or applied science, often with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and the responsible use of natural resources. By highlighting emerging talent, the Birkeland Prize aims to encourage scientific excellence and inspire future breakthroughs in chemistry and physics that can address global challenges.
Yara's Birkeland pris 2025
Maria Markova, postdoctoral researcher in nuclear astrophysics at UiO and the Norwegian Research Centre, won Yara’s Birkeland Prize in 2025 for her PhD research project “Approaching the Pygmy Dipole Resonance in Sn isotopes with the Oslo method” defended in 2024. In her work, she explores the processes responsible for the production of heavy elements in the Universe using nuclear structure inputs extracted in several experimental campaigns at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. The prize was awarded for the contribution of Dr. Markova to the fields of nuclear physics and astrophysics during the Birkeland Lecture evening at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
